About the local self-government

Zrenjanin is the largest city in the Serbian part of Banat and it is a political, economic, cultural and sports center. According to the area of the territory that administratively belongs to it (1326km2), it is the largest city in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the second in the Republic of Serbia, with about 132.000 residents and more than 20 nationalities among them.

Natural-geographical position

The city of Zrenjanin lies at 20° 23‘east longitude and 45° 23‘north latitude, in the center of the Serbian part of the Banat region, on the banks of the Begej and Tisa rivers. The altitude of Zrenjanin is 80m and on the territory of the city it ranges from 77 to 97 meters. The area of the municipality is distinctly flat. Zrenjanin is 75 kilometres away from the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, and 50 kilometres from the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Novi Sad. The current borders of the European Union (Romania) are equally distant. The position makes Zrenjanin an extremely important transition center and a potential resource in the north-south and east-west directions.


The climate is steppe continental, the average annual temperature is 11.2°C and the annual rainfall is about 622mm. The most pronounced winds are Košava, the gust of winds from the northwest and the north wind. Zrenjanin has 2000-2200 hours of sunshine a year, the least hours of sunshine are in December – 42.5 and the most in July – 314.

History of the LSG

The first mention of the name and settlement of Beckerek is recorded in July 10, 1326 in the charter of the Buda Chapter. In the 18th century, it became the center of the county. The first elementary school dates from 1722, the first beer production began in 1735 and the first bank was founded in 1844. Today, in the 21st century, we can say that Zrenjanin is a city that selflessly invests in its future, a city in which many new ideas are invested, as a legacy for generations to come.
